Lyrebird Village

Lyrebird Village is a low care residential establishment for the elderly in Drouin.
Recently Lyrebird was given ongoing funding from the Government for an extra 17 beds.
All that remained was for the Committee of Lyrebird to raise the cost of
building the extension. There was tremendous support from the local shire and the Community.
Many fund raising events have been held already and more are planned.
The Rotary Club of Drouin has attained it's committment of $25,000
towards the building and all members of the Club are proud of their contribution.

Alex Goudie Shelter

Now complete, the new shelter at the Alex Goudie Park, just east of the
Royal Hotel, is an shining example of Rotary at work in the Community.
The Rotary Club of Drouin spent a number of weeks constructing the shelter,
often hampered by some inclement weather. This shelter will greatly enhance what is a very attractive site.
Many hours can be spent sitting looking at the birds on the small lake or just having a quite time
away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Since the completion of this shelter, the driving force behind it's construction, John Saddington,
has passed away and it was with great pleasure that the Baw Baw Shire
and the Rotary Club of Drouin have named the shelter
'The John Saddington Rotunda' in his honour.

Field Days

In late March all Rotarians will converge on Lardner Park to man the gates.
This is our heaviest commitment project with all Rotarians of the Club participating.
It takes a lot of coordinating, a job that Rtn. Don Blackley has been doing most admirably
for many years now, and a lot of stamina on behalf of members.
It may look easy just standing at the gate taking money, giving receipts and punching holes in entry card
but there is a lot more to it. If we got together we could write some sort of book
on the dealing that we have had over the years and the excuses that we have been given
by all sorts of folk trying to enter the Field Days site.
Despite that, it is the project that is most looked forward to on our calendar,
providing an atmosphere of fellowship and fun and raising a lot of dollars
for the Club to distribute back into the local Community.

Swap Meet

On February 9th, 2003, as part of the Drouin Ficifolia Festival, the Club held it's first Swap Meet.
It was organised by Keith Doherty and Ray Howe.
The two of them spend a number of hours on a number of days going around to
other swap meets in the district to advertise our event and
we were left hoping that numbers of sellers, swappers and buyers would turn up.
Fortunately the efforts of these Rotarians were returned many times.

The Drouin Recreation Reserve (Footy Ground for some of us) was full of cars goods and people.
Some arrived on Saturday night after many hours of driving
and the final setup started at 4.15am, with a very lengthy queue of cars
waiting to get in at the opening time of 6.30am.

The gates opened to the public at 8.00am and cars and pedestrians were still arriving at 12.45pm.

Over 30 Rotarians and partners turned out on the day to make it
one of the most successful events in recent memory.
The bodies were tired at the end of the day but
most of the talk was on next year's Swap Meet - things to continue and thing to improve.

Thanks to all the Rotarians, sellers, swappers and others who helped make the day a success.

The event has continued to grow each year since under the guidance of Rotarian John Kinrade and, for 2008, the name has changed to reflect that growth.
If Swap Meets are your thing, watch this space for news of the next one.
